Our Approach to Behaviour

At Ranelagh Primary School, we believe that positive behaviour is at the heart of successful learning. We want every child to feel safe, respected and valued, while developing the confidence and self-discipline to make positive choices.

Our approach is based on our three simple expectations:

We are Respectful.

We are Safe.

These expectations underpin the way we learn, play and work together across our school community.

Positive Relationships

​

We believe that positive relationships, mutual respect and trust are essential for creating a happy and successful school. All adults model the behaviour we expect from our pupils, and we encourage children to show kindness, care, empathy, tolerance and respect towards others.

​

We give first attention to positive behaviour and recognise children who demonstrate our expectations and go above and beyond.

​

Recognition may include:

• Positive praise and encouragement

• Class recognition

• Positive messages or postcards home

• Phone calls home

• Class rewards

• Special recognition and events

Supporting Positive Behaviour

​

We understand that children sometimes need support to manage their behaviour and make positive choices. Our staff use a calm, consistent and supportive approach to help children understand expectations and return to their learning.

​

Where behaviour does not meet our expectations, staff may use strategies such as reminders, redirection, time to reflect and restorative conversations.

​

Our approach focuses on helping children understand the impact of their behaviour, take responsibility for their choices and repair relationships where necessary.

​

We praise in public and address concerns privately, treating every child with dignity and respect.

​

​

Restorative Approach

​

Restorative conversations are an important part of our approach. Following an incident, children are supported to reflect on what happened, consider who may have been affected and think about what they can do differently next time.

We believe that every new session provides an opportunity for a fresh start.

Working with Families

​

We believe that strong partnerships between school and home are essential in supporting positive behaviour.

​

We will communicate with parents and carers when there are concerns about behaviour and will also make sure that positive behaviour and achievements are celebrated. Where additional support is needed, we will work with families to agree appropriate strategies and next steps.

Supporting Individual Needs

​

We recognise that some children may need additional support to develop positive behaviours. Where appropriate, we work with children, families and relevant professionals to understand individual needs and put suitable support in place.

Reasonable adjustments may be made where necessary, including for children with additional needs or SEND.

Our aim is always to support children to succeed, feel included and develop the skills they need to manage their behaviour positively.

Serious Incidents

​

The safety and wellbeing of everyone in our school community is our highest priority. Serious incidents are dealt with promptly, fairly and in accordance with the school's Behaviour Policy and relevant school procedures.

​

Where necessary, the school may use appropriate sanctions and involve parents or carers. Exclusion is considered only where appropriate and in accordance with the relevant statutory guidance.
